Mile Square Regional Park is the trout water most Fountain Valley anglers start with: a 20-acre lake on Euclid Street, $3 to drive in, with seven stocking weeks scheduled for the 2025-26 winter. For more fish and more room, Irvine Lake and Laguna Niguel Regional Park had the heaviest schedules, ten weeks each, though Laguna Niguel is roughly half an hour south and Irvine Lake opens only Fridays through Sundays.
The choice between the rest turns on two things: whether you hold a California fishing license, and when you can get to the water. Which lakes get the most trout plants

Clark with six, Yorba with five and Carbon Canyon with four. Tri-City and Irvine Regional Park got three each, so a trip there is worth timing to a plant date.
Two waters sit outside that schedule. The state planted Centennial Park directly, in mid-November and again in early December of the 2025-26 season, and Santa Ana River Lakes stocks its own fish every week. At Mile Square the first day or two after a plant is the time to go, while the rainbows are still bunched near where they went in.
License rules and what you can bring
The two license-free waters run on their own rules. Irvine Lake is shoreline fishing only, with no boats or float tubes, a five-fish limit, catch-and-release for bass, and bait limited to worms, mackerel, dough baits and artificial lures. Santa Ana River Lakes rents boats first come, first served but bans private boats, float tubes, kick boats and dogs. Everywhere else, a California license is the price of entry for anyone 16 and up.
Hours, crowds and the fish after trout season

Santa Ana River Lakes
The pay-to-fish option, about ten miles up the Santa Ana River in Anaheim, and the only water in this set that stocks its own fish every week instead of waiting on a county schedule. No California fishing license is required, and it is the one place here selling night and overnight sessions, which is why it keeps drawing catfish anglers through the summer. Boat rentals are first come, first served, and you cannot launch a private boat, float tube or kick boat; dogs are not allowed either. One caveat: the operator publishes its permit prices only in a printed brochure and its ticketing app, not on the website, so call ahead before you drive out.
Irvine Lake
At over 700 acres this is by far the biggest freshwater fishing in Orange County, and its trout plants are the most frequent on the 2025-26 OC Parks schedule, ten weeks from late November through February. Parking is $5 and no fishing license is required, which makes it an easy first trip with kids. The constraints are real, though: it opens Fridays through Sundays only, it is shoreline fishing with no boats or float tubes, and there is a five-fish limit with bass catch-and-release. Laguna Niguel Regional Park

Tri-City Regional Park

Catfish and bluegill are the year-round fallback once the trout are gone. Irvine Regional Park

Centennial Park
