Width barely varies. Five of the seven chairs with a published seat width sit at exactly 24 inches, and none goes wider. What separates them is how high you sit and how much the frame is rated to carry. Seat heights run from 13.5 inches on the Kelty Low Loveseat to 21.9 on the American Tall High Back, and ratings run from 400 to 800 pounds, so a buyer who struggles to stand up and a buyer who keeps breaking chairs should be looking at different rows.

Seat height matters most if getting up is the hard part
Nineteen inches is the most common seat height here, shared by four of the nine chairs that list one. The American Tall High Back sits highest at 21.9, then the GCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker XL at 20 and the Kijaro Dual Lock XXL at 19.5. At the other end, the YETI Trailhead's 16.75-inch seat is the lowest single chair here, and the Kelty Low Loveseat's 13.5 inches is low on purpose, so nobody towers over the fire or blocks the view.
Width is a smaller decision because the choice is narrow. The King Kong, the Browning Camping Kodiak, the Big Kahuna, the Coleman Big & Tall and the Kijaro all measure 24 inches. The GCI rocker is 23.6 and the American Tall 22.6, which its summary says suits tall more than broad. Four have no published seat width at all: the YETI, the KingCamp XXL director's chair, the Sunnyfeel and the Kelty loveseat.
What the weight ratings do and do not tell you
Three chairs carry 800 pounds: the King Kong, the Kodiak and the Big Kahuna. The Big Kahuna's own product page has reviews from men at 240 and 325 pounds saying it outlasted the 300-pound-rated chairs they kept breaking. At the bottom, the Kijaro and the GCI rocker are rated to 400, and a Kijaro buyer reports the seams splitting after about a year at 250 pounds, which is why its summary calls it an occasional-use chair.
Two ratings need reading closely. KingCamp's 550 pounds is a static load; the maker gives 440 pounds for the seat front, the figure that counts when you drop onto the front edge. The Kelty Low Loveseat's 600 pounds is shared between two people, not per seat.
The $300 YETI against the $89.99 King Kong
The YETI Trailhead's money goes into build: a FlexGrid mesh seat that conforms rather than sags, a rust-resistant frame, puck-sized feet for sand, and a five-year warranty. It holds 500 pounds, weighs 13.3, and has one cup holder and no padding. The King Kong holds 800, weighs 13, and has a quilted seat and two cup holders. A review of the YETI made the same comparison and sided with the King Kong on cost and capacity.
The Kodiak is the King Kong with an insulated cooler pouch in the armrest and camo fabric options, for $10 more. Its capacity, seat size, packed size and chair weight are identical, so the extra ten dollars buys only the pouch and the pattern.

ALPS Mountaineering King Kong Chair
The King Kong is the reference point for heavy-duty camp chairs: a powder-coated steel frame rated to 800 pounds under a quilted 600D polyester seat, at a price well below the premium brands. You get a 24-inch seat, a mesh cup holder on each side, a stash pocket on each armrest, and a carry bag with backpack straps. The trade-off is bulk, at 13 pounds and a 40-inch packed length, so it lives in the trunk rather than on your back. CleverHiker, reviewing YETI's much pricier Trailhead, notes the King Kong shares its burly structure and wide seat while costing significantly less and holding more weight.
Browning Camping Kodiak Chair
The Kodiak is built on the same 800-pound chassis as the ALPS King Kong, with identical seat dimensions, packed size and chair weight, and adds an insulated cooler pouch in the armrest plus camo fabric options. Browning's own pitch is aimed at people tired of cheap chairs breaking in front of family and friends, which is a fair description of who buys at this capacity. You pay about ten dollars more than the King Kong for the cooler and the patterns. If you want neither, the two are effectively the same chair.
TravelChair Big Kahuna Chair
The Big Kahuna is the lightest of the 800-pound chairs here at 10.75 pounds, built on oversized steel tubing with reinforced rivets and molded grommets, and it folds down to a 5 by 5 by 39 inch bundle. There is no padding, no cooler pouch and one cup holder; it is a plain chair built unusually well, and YETI backs it with a five-year warranty. Its seat is the lowest of the single chairs here at 16.75 inches, which is the wrong direction if getting up is the hard part. CleverHiker's verdict is blunt: the ALPS King Kong shares its structure and wide seat, costs far less, and holds more weight.
Sunnyfeel 500 lb Heavy Duty Oversized Camping Chair
Sunnyfeel's oversized chair is the padded 500-pound option at $90: a reinforced steel frame in a 28-inch-wide body, 140g foam padding through the seat and back, a ventilated mesh panel, and double-seam 600x300D Oxford fabric. At 12.8 pounds it folds to roughly 40 by 8.5 by 8 inches and comes with a shoulder carry bag. It is the least established brand in this set, and Sunnyfeel publishes overall dimensions rather than seat measurements, which is why the seat width and seat height columns are blank for it.
KingCamp XXL Folding Padded Director's Chair with Side Table
If you would rather sit upright in a director's chair than sink into a sling, this is the heavy-duty version: 550 pounds of rated static load on a powder-coated steel tube frame, double-layer padding, thick foam armrests, and a side table with a pocket for an ice pack. The cost is weight. At 19.2 pounds it is the heaviest single chair here, and buyers on KingCamp's own page say so plainly while still rating it highly. KingCamp publishes unfolded and folded dimensions but no seat width or seat height, so those cells are blank.
Kelty Low Loveseat
The Low Loveseat is the two-person answer: a 600-pound powder-coated steel frame under a bench wide enough for two adults, sitting only 13.5 inches off the ground so nobody is towering over the campfire or blocking the view. The back is slightly reclined, there are insulated drink holders on both sides, and the whole thing rolls into a tote bag at 34.5 inches. Split between two people its 15.38 pounds carries easily. The low seat is the real trade-off: if standing up is the hard part for you, this is the wrong shape.
GCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker XL

How we researched this
The cutoff is a maker's rating of 400 pounds or more, which left out several popular chairs: the Browning Directors Chair XT (325 pounds), the Browning Fireside (300), GCI's standard Freestyle Rocker (250), the REI Co-op Camp XL (300), and the lightweight Helinox and NEMO chairs (300 to 320). A few heavy-duty chairs were left out for sourcing reasons instead. The Guide Gear models sold through Sportsman's Guide had no readable price on the page, and the Timber Ridge XXL Director's Chair (600 pounds, with a 28.4-inch seat) has no maker spec page. KingCamp's Lumbar Support Oversized Chair was dropped because its own site lists two different prices and a review there says a 200-pound person found it uncomfortable.
Prices are list prices on each maker's own site as of September 3, 2026, one chair each; most are discounted at stores, and Coleman was showing a sale price below list. Where a seat width or height is missing, the maker does not publish it: YETI, KingCamp and Sunnyfeel give only overall dimensions, and Kelty lists a seat height but no seat width. A few seat measurements come from retailer spec sheets where the maker gave none. The Big Kahuna was out of stock on TravelChair's site in September 2026, so check availability, and check the rated capacity on the exact model you order.
