Chicco KeyFit 35 ClearTex

The KeyFit line is the one most car seat technicians hand new parents, because the base tightens with a single pull-strap and it is very hard to install badly. The 35 is the longer-lived version: it takes a child to 35 pounds and 32 inches, where the original KeyFit 30 stops at 30 and 30. That extra headrest travel costs you room, though. At 28.75 inches front to back it is one of the deepest seats here, so in a compact car the front passenger will feel it. Chicco's own store listed every colour as out of stock when I checked.

Chicco KeyFit 30 ClearTex

The older, shorter KeyFit is the better small-car buy of the two Chiccos. It is 2.25 inches shorter front to back than the KeyFit 35 and twenty dollars cheaper, and it keeps the same one-pull base that made the line's reputation. The trade is longevity: it stops at 30 pounds and 30 inches, so a long baby may outgrow it around the first birthday. It also has no anti-rebound bar, which the 35 adds.

Graco SnugRide 35 Lite LX

This is the lightest mainstream carrier on the list and usually the cheapest, which is why it turns up on so many small-car shortlists. Car Seats For The Littles measured the carrier at 7.2 pounds and the base at 21 inches deep, and noted it installs baseless with European belt routing, useful in a cab or a grandparent's car. The seat is plain: no load leg, no anti-rebound bar, and their reviewers found the canopy noisy to open. Rated to 35 pounds and 32 inches.

Clek Liing

Clek built the Liing around the two things that matter in a tight back seat: it is 16.9 inches wide, and its base is narrower still at 13.2 inches, which is what makes three seats across a small bench plausible. It installs with rigid LATCH and a metal load leg that props down to the vehicle floor. The costs are real ones: it is the most expensive seat here, the base alone weighs 17 pounds, and at 27.7 inches deep it is not especially short front to back.

CYBEX Aton G2 with Load Leg Base

At 26.1 inches the Aton G2 is one of the two shortest seats here front to back, and it still ships with a load leg base, a combination nothing else on this list matches at the price. The headrest raises through eleven positions with the harness following it, so there is no rethreading as the baby grows. It is wider than the narrow specialists at 17.5 inches, so it is a front-legroom answer rather than a three-across one. CYBEX does not publish the child weight and height limits on the pages I could read.

Peg Perego Primo Viaggio 4-35 Urban Mobility

This is the baseless one. It is designed to be belt-installed without a stay-in-car base at all, which removes an inch or two of hardware from the footprint and makes it the easy answer for a second car, a cab, or a grandparent who takes the baby once a week. Turned to its forward position, the carry handle doubles as an anti-rebound bar. Two things to weigh: at 10.8 pounds it is the heaviest carrier here, and the price buys no base, so adding one later is a separate purchase.

Britax Willow S

The Willow S is the cheapest genuinely narrow seat here: 16.9 inches wide, the same as the Clek, for a little over half the money. Britax pairs it with the Alpine base and a ReboundReduce carry handle that braces against the vehicle seat back. The catch is depth, not width. At 28.1 inches it is among the longest on this list, so it helps a crowded bench more than it helps a short cabin, and it tops out at 30 pounds.

UPPAbaby Aria V2

The Aria is the lightest carrier in this comparison at six pounds without the canopy and insert, and it is the only seat here that gets both an anti-rebound panel and a load leg. At 25.8 inches it is also the shortest front to back, so it is the strongest all-round pick for a genuinely small car. Two caveats: it is expensive, and it has the lowest ceiling on the list at 30 pounds and 30 inches, so a tall baby will move on sooner than from a KeyFit 35.

UPPAbaby Mesa V3

The Mesa is UPPAbaby's mainstream infant seat and the one that clicks straight onto a Vista or Cruz without adapters. Its fourth handle position acts as an anti-rebound brace, and it carries children to 32 inches, two inches taller than the lighter Aria. For a small car it is the weaker of UPPAbaby's two: 9.9 pounds to carry and 28 inches long once it is on its base, against the Aria's 6 pounds and 25.8 inches.

Nuna PIPA RX

The PIPA RX pairs a 7.6-pound carrier with the RELX base and its steel-reinforced rigid latch, which Nuna says installs in about five seconds. At 25.2 inches it is the shortest seat here front to back, which is exactly what a small car needs, and it is FAA certified with or without the base for flying. It is the priciest listing in this table, it stops at 30 pounds and 30 inches, and the seller's spec block does not name a load leg either way.

Evenflo LiteMax 30

At about $150 this is the budget entry, and it is genuinely light at 8.17 pounds. Evenflo rates it from three pounds, the lowest minimum here, which matters for a preemie coming home from hospital. It is the wrong shape for the brief, though: 19 inches across the widest point and 28.5 inches deep, making it the widest and one of the longest seats in the comparison. Buy it for the price and the newborn fit, not because it is small.
