An Uptown Normal fixture since 1996, still run by the founding family and one of the only kitchens in town that is fully vegetarian and vegan. The coffee is roasted in the shop, the breads and pastries are made from scratch, and the interior walls are given over to a different local artist every month. Outside, wrought-iron tables sit under the awning on Beaufort Street, a few steps from the Illinois State campus, which is why the front walk fills up first on a warm morning. It is a student-heavy, unhurried room, so a table inside at midday is not a given.

The Uptown Normal half of a two-cafe operation that Steve and April Fritzen started in downtown Bloomington in 2002; this location opened in 2007 and the company has roasted its own coffee since, now under the Sirius Roasters name. It sits on the Uptown Circle, and its outdoor seats are benches and chairs tucked under the building's covered walkway rather than an open patio, so they stay usable in drizzle and in the middle of the afternoon sun. Regulars come for the espresso and the bakery case. The one real limitation is the clock: it closes at 4 p.m. seven days a week, hours earlier than the others here.

The newest shop on this list, opened in June 2026 as Lab Coffee's third location and its first standalone one, after two Bloomington spots that live inside other businesses. It shares a building with Encounter Campus Ministries just off the Illinois State campus, seats more than a hundred people indoors, and adds an outdoor patio that the owners said was still gaining furniture at opening. The menu leans past coffee into acai bowls, New York bagels and sourdough toast with toppings. Watch the calendar rather than the clock: it closes at 2 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and weekends, and only stays open into the evening Wednesday through Friday.

Opened in November 2023 by Noah Riley, who also runs Bloom's Coffee Bar in Bloomington, this is the most deliberately built room of the four: 2,200 square feet with two fireplaces, a pair of SanRemo espresso machines and a Typhoon roaster running behind glass. The coffee is roasted on site, pastries are baked daily with gluten-free options, and there is a drive-thru for mornings when you are not staying. Inside there is a reservable community room for meetings or quiet study; outside there is a patio, which reviewers like but describe as short on shade when the afternoon turns hot. It is out at the Shoppes at College Hills rather than Uptown, so it suits an errand run better than a walk around the Circle.
