Coffee shops in the Mission District, San Francisco that roast their own beans

Ritual Coffee Roasters (Valencia Street)

The cafe that taught a lot of San Francisco what specialty coffee tastes like. Eileen Rinaldi opened it in a former furniture store in 2005, roasted and packed every bag on site for years, and the cavernous room (remodeled in 2013, with parklet seating out front) still feels like the neighborhood's living room. Roasting moved out long ago to Ritual's own Howard Street roastery, so what you get here is the cafe, not the roaster at work, and the space now doubles as a general store stocking goods from other local small businesses. It also keeps the longest hours of any shop on this list, open past 7pm every night.

Four Barrel Coffee

Four Barrel was started in 2008 by one of Ritual's founders and sits a few blocks north on Valencia, in a big wood-lined room built around its roasting equipment, including a vintage German machine the company flew to Frankfurt to buy. They source nearly all their coffee directly and roast it themselves, and they are deliberately unfriendly to remote work: no free Wi-Fi and no power for laptops, which is either the appeal or the dealbreaker. Worth knowing that founder Jeremy Tooker left the company and divested his shares after a 2018 harassment lawsuit brought by former employees; the business has been run by the remaining owners since.

Sightglass Coffee (20th Street)

Sightglass began in 2009 as a service cart in SoMa and is named for the little window on its vintage Probat roaster. The 20th Street shop is both a neighborhood coffee bar and a roastery, so the beans in the grinder are roasted in the room, and the coffees sourced for this location are chosen specifically for it. The room itself is the draw: an open espresso bar under a reclaimed redwood ceiling, on a block it shares with Trick Dog and Penny Roma. It opens at 6:30am on weekdays, the earliest on this list alongside Ritual.

Grand Coffee (OG)

Nabeel Silmi opened Grand in 2010 in the old Grand Theater building, two blocks from the 24th Street BART station, and the shop has spent fifteen years being the block's front stoop: a small bar where artists, service workers, longtime residents and newcomers all end up on the same sidewalk. It brewed Four Barrel coffee for its first eight years and only started roasting its own in 2018, which it now does at a facility in West Oakland rather than in the Mission. Seating is minimal, so this is a grab-a-cup-and-stand-outside kind of place.

Grand Coffee Too

The second Grand, a few blocks up Mission Street from the original, pouring the same house-roasted coffee under the same ownership. The practical difference is the clock: Too stays open until 6pm seven days a week, an hour later than the OG shop, which makes it the most reliable late-afternoon option among the Mission's roaster-run cafes. It is also the company's registered business address, so wholesale and bag pickups run through here.

Linea Caffe (Mission District Cafe)

Linea is the project of Andrew Barnett, a roaster with decades behind him, and the coffee is the reason to come: all of it certified organic, much of it from regenerative and biodynamic farms, and pitched at sweetness and balance rather than a big acidic hit. Wirecutter called it possibly the most elegant and balanced cup of coffee its reviewer had ever had. The 18th Street shop is a small espresso counter, not a hangout, and the roasting happens at Linea's Potrero Hill roastery-cafe instead. The catch is the hours: it closes at 2pm on weekdays, by far the earliest close on this list.

Andytown Coffee Roasters (Harrison Street)

Andytown is an Outer Sunset roaster and bakery started in 2014 by two baristas, Michael McCrory and Lauren Crabbe, best known citywide for the Snowy Plover. This is its Mission outpost, and it is worth knowing what it is before you go: a coffee counter inside Gus's Community Market rather than a sit-down cafe, so you order, you get an excellent small-batch coffee and an Irish soda bread scone, and you carry on. The roasting all happens back in the Sunset.

Hedge Coffee

Hedge spent about a decade as a mobile coffee operation, catering events for the design world and for Apple and Google, and was the roaster other coffee people quietly rated before most of the public had heard of it. Its first permanent home opened on Shotwell Street in October 2025 and is a roastery first, cafe second: a Loring roaster in the production room, a pour-over bar, and a courtyard with a 15-foot redwood growing through it. The owners have said plainly they did not build it for the eight-hour laptop crowd, and with roughly 20 seats it is not the place to camp.

Abanico Coffee Roasters

Ana Valle, a licensed Q grader who was born in El Salvador and grew up making trips into the Mission with her family, opened Abanico at 17th and Mission in 2021 after years of roasting wholesale. The coffee is mostly Latin American and sourced through direct relationships with producers, with a deliberate focus on women-owned farms, and the drinks menu leans that way too: cafe con leche and cortaditos alongside the usual espresso. The shop is bright and gallery-like with a Jason Jagel mural across the back wall. A second Abanico is due in the Inner Sunset in fall 2026.
