Helix Brewing Co.

Helix is the spot most locals name first when they want a food truck with their beer: a rotating truck parks outside the taproom most nights and you order from whoever showed up that evening. It sits in La Mesa's industrial pocket on Commercial Street, brewing on a 10-barrel brewhouse and pouring a second sour-beer brand, Sourworx, from the same bar. Visitors describe a chill beer garden where the truck takes your order and brings the food to your table. The trade-off is that the truck changes nightly, so a specific craving means checking the schedule first.

La Mesa Village Farmers Market

Every Friday afternoon around ninety vendors set up along La Mesa Boulevard between 4th Street and Palm Avenue, and the prepared-food end of it is where the trucks and food stands park. It is the closest thing downtown La Mesa has to a weekly food truck gathering: dinner, live music and produce in one walkable stretch, with a covered Market Nook of artisan and specialty vendors tucked into the Walkway of the Stars breezeway. Santee is a short drive north-east of La Mesa, which makes this the easiest East County brewery to fold into a food truck run. Grossmont College

Curbside Bites parks a truck on the Grossmont College campus on Tuesdays and Wednesdays around midday, on a campus that sits off Grossmont College Drive in El Cajon a few minutes from La Mesa. This is a lunchtime stop with a single vendor rather than a gathering of trucks, so treat it as a convenient weekday meal rather than a destination. The upside is that the vendor is published in advance on the Curbside Bites schedule. Best suited to people already working or studying nearby.

Cuyamaca College

The Rancho San Diego campus gets a Curbside Bites truck on Wednesdays from 11am to 2pm, out east of La Mesa off Rancho San Diego Parkway. Like its sister college up the road, this is one midday truck serving a campus crowd rather than a food truck park. The draw is the published schedule, so you know which vendor is coming before you drive out. Worth a look only if you are already in Rancho San Diego on a Wednesday.

If what you actually want is several food trucks in one place, this is the nearest thing to it: Curbside Bites runs Food Truck Tuesdays at Civita Park in Mission Valley with a rotating line-up of four to five trucks.
