Music festivals near Council Bluffs, Iowa in winter

Lincoln Exposed

For four nights every February, five bars and clubs on a couple of blocks of downtown Lincoln hand their stages over to Nebraska musicians and nobody else. The 2026 edition ran 134 performances across the Zoo Bar, Duffy's Tavern, Bourbon Theatre, Bodega's Alley and 1867 Bar, covering everything from folk and pop punk to hip-hop and self-invented micro-genres. One all-access wristband gets you into all of it, sets run 40 minutes, and the venues are close enough to walk between. Of everything on this list it is the closest to Council Bluffs, roughly an hour west on I-80, and the one that feels most like a festival rather than a concert.

Winter Blues Fest

The Central Iowa Blues Society started this as a one-night showcase in 1994 and it now fills the Downtown Des Moines Marriott with 20 acts over two nights on five stages. Everything happens inside on three hotel floors, so you move between rooms without ever going back out into February, and each room has table seating and a dance floor. The bill mixes touring blues names with an Iowa Blues Hall of Fame showcase and the winners of the state blues challenge, which makes it a good place to hear regional players you would not otherwise catch. The host hotel sells a festival room block, so a lot of people simply stay put for the weekend.

Winterlude Jazz Festival

Johnson County Community College gives its two concert halls over to jazz for a weekend each winter, with Kansas City players filling the afternoons and a national headliner closing the festival. The 2026 edition ended with Arturo O'Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, and the daytime program mixed local quartets with a photography lecture and the winner of the college's area high school jazz competition. This is a seated concert-hall festival rather than a club crawl, so it suits anyone who wants to sit and listen rather than move between rooms. One thing to watch: the weekend moves around, landing in mid-February some years and early March in others.

Winter Dance Party

This is the annual pilgrimage to the ballroom where Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J. P. Richardson played their last show on February 2, 1959. The Surf Ballroom runs three days of fifties rock and roll around that anniversary, with tribute bands, surviving contemporaries of the original bill, dance lessons and tours of a room that has barely changed since. The crowd skews older and a lot of it travels in from out of state, so passes and hotel rooms go early. It is the longest drive here, about three hours northeast of Council Bluffs, and the one people plan a weekend around rather than drive home from.

Free Week: Downtown Iowa City's Winter Arts and Culture Festival

Free Week is not purely a music festival, but for one week in February more than 50 events run across roughly 20 downtown Iowa City venues and a large share of them are concerts. The 2026 program put Elizabeth Moen at the Englert Theatre, a silent disco in the natural history museum, symphony and jazz showcases and a string of club shows, alongside film screenings, theater, comedy and drag nights. Nothing costs anything at the door and the artists are still paid through the venues, which is unusual for a festival this size. It is the farthest of these from Council Bluffs, around four hours east, and the one to choose if you would rather browse a week of options than commit to a single bill.
