What to do in Corpus Christi when it rains

Texas State Aquarium

Corpus Christi's biggest indoor attraction sits on North Beach, and one ticket covers every animal presentation plus more than 300 species. Most of the galleries are under roof, but the aquarium's own FAQ describes indoor and outdoor animal exhibits and the Splash Park is open air, so rain does cost you part of the site. USS Lexington Museum on the Bay

A World War II Essex-class aircraft carrier, nicknamed the Blue Ghost, permanently moored across the ship channel from downtown and open every day as a museum. Inside are a Pearl Harbor exhibit, scale models, a flight simulator, escape rooms and a 3D mega theater, so most of a visit is out of the weather, though the flight deck itself is open to the sky. General admission is sold only at the museum's own booths on the day you visit, not online, and parking is charged separately.

Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History

The city's science-and-history museum sits downtown on Chaparral, a block from the art museum, with hands-on exhibits pitched at school-age children and rotating programs such as homeschool days and summer STEAM weeks. Adult admission is $15, with cheaper rates for seniors, military and teachers, and a Museums for All rate of $3 for SNAP cardholders. Art Museum of South Texas

At $6 it is the cheapest ticketed museum on this list, and it runs hands-on programs such as origami, calligraphy and kite building. The catch is the schedule: it opens Wednesday to Sunday only, with Mondays and Tuesdays reserved for private events.

Selena Museum

The Selena Museum is inside Q Productions on Leopard Street, and it is a single-room tribute rather than a half-day outing: expect a short visit built around memorabilia, with the store attached. Admission is $5 for anyone aged two and up, the cheapest ticket here. The catch for a rainy weekend is the schedule, because it opens Monday to Friday only and is closed both Saturday and Sunday.

Harbor Playhouse

A bayfront community theatre that bills itself as the oldest continually operating one in Texas, running a full season of musicals and plays with local casts. Tickets are a flat $20, which is cheaper than most touring theatre, but the box office only opens on show weekends, so this is a plan-ahead evening rather than somewhere to duck into out of a shower. La Palmera

The city's enclosed mall on South Padre Island Drive, about 1.2 million square feet with more than 100 shops and restaurants under one roof, anchored by Dillard's and JCPenney. For a wet afternoon the practical point is that all of it is inside, including the upper-level children's play area, the food court and full-service restaurants like The Cheesecake Factory and P.F. Chang's, plus a Dave & Buster's arcade. It is open seven days a week with free parking, and it was the first indoor mall in the country to earn LEED Silver certification.

In The Game Funtrackers

A family fun park at the island end of South Padre Island Drive: go-karts, bumper boats and mini-golf outside, and what it calls the best arcade in Corpus Christi inside. On a wet weekday it is really an arcade visit, since the outdoor attractions do not open until 5:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. It is open every day and charges per attraction rather than at the door, so there is no single admission price to compare.

Lucky Strike Corpus Christi

The former Bowlero centre on Ayers Street, now branded Lucky Strike, with 40 lanes plus an arcade, billiards, a sports bar and a lounge. It is open every day and stays open late, to 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, which makes it one of the few things on this list that still works after dinner. The $18.99 in the table is its recurring weekend Family Unlimited package (unlimited bowling with shoes) rather than a door charge, so ordinary per-game pricing will differ.

Urban Air Adventure Park Corpus Christi

An indoor trampoline and adventure park on South Staples, with a Sky Rider indoor zipline, warrior and ropes courses, climbing walls, dodgeball and a tube playground for smaller children. Being entirely indoors is the whole point on a wet day, and it is open every day of the week, though on Monday to Thursday it does not open until 4 p.m. Pricing is by attraction level and package rather than a flat door charge, and the location page does not publish a rate, so check before you drive out.

11th Hour Escape

Four 60-minute escape rooms in a strip centre on South Padre Island Drive: a pirate captain's quarters, a Coastal Bend crime scene, a fallout shelter and a lost-city dig. Every room is $28 a person plus tax, and the venue is open noon to 9:30 p.m. seven days a week, though they ask you to book ahead rather than walk in. They make a point of letting a group pick its difficulty level, which helps if you are mixing first-timers with people who do these often.

La Retama Central Library

The central branch of the Corpus Christi Public Libraries, downtown on Comanche, and the free fallback when everything else on this list costs money. Beyond the usual collections it holds the city's local history archives, and there is somewhere to sit and read out a squall with children in tow. Watch the clock: it is closed Mondays, runs 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday to Friday, and only 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
