The Twig Book Shop

San Antonio's elder statesman of indie bookselling, open since 1972 and now tucked into the Pearl beside Bakery Lorraine and the Museum Reach stretch of the River Walk. It stocks new releases for adults and children plus a Texana section deep enough that history readers drive in for it, and the calendar is busy almost daily with author signings, open mic poetry and the Twiglet story time. Prices are full retail and the shop is compact, so it rewards browsing more than bargain hunting.

Nowhere Bookshop

Bestselling author Jenny Lawson's Alamo Heights shop, and the one most locals name first when a visitor asks where to go. It carries new books, runs a thick calendar of author nights and book clubs (there is a horror one and a romance one), and the Middle of Nowhere cafe pours coffee, wine and beer with a weekday happy hour. It reads as a hangout as much as a store, there is parking behind the building, and weekend afternoons are the busiest hours here.

Pandora's Bookstore & Coffee Bar

A small downtown shop on Broadway a couple of blocks from Alamo Plaza, run by Barbara Thomas, a retired San Antonio police officer. The shelves lean into Black authors and a wide range of perspectives, the walls carry create and inspire artwork, and a coffee bar and a well-known green couch make it a place to sit rather than just browse. Hours are short, Tuesday through Saturday from 11 to 5, so check before you make the trip downtown.

Pages for Ages

A Northwest Side bookstore, tea shop and bakery started in 2025 by four friends who met in a book club and kept going. The shelves run from classics to new releases with a curated set of banned titles, and the counter serves loose tea, homemade pastries and, this being a shop with a mystical streak, crystals beside the fantasy section. It is built for lingering: book clubs, journaling and crochet classes, story times with rescue bunnies, and Sunday hours you are invited to spend in pajamas.

Book Nerd

A genre-first shop in the Castle Hills Market, opened in October 2025 by Lauren and Sean Richmond, who wanted the fandoms they love at the front of the store rather than buried in a back corner. Fantasy, science fiction and romantasy lead the floor, backed by roughly 10,000 new titles across mystery, literary fiction and young adult, plus board games, stickers and candles. There is a whimsical children's area and a gathering room at the back the shop rents by the hour for book clubs and workshops.

Secret Garden Books & More

A tiny Tobin Hill shop that is equal parts romance bookstore, plant shop and dog boutique, which sounds like three businesses and works as one. The romance shelves are the heart of it, with a notable run of Latina-authored and Spanish-language titles, and the rest of the room is houseplants, gifts and gear for literary dogs. Square footage is small and the hours are limited, so it pairs best with another stop nearby rather than a trip of its own.

Bluebonnet Books & Homegrown Goods

A Beacon Hill newcomer that opened in March 2026 behind a green-doored storefront on Fredericksburg Road. Most of the stock is used, vintage and rare, with some new titles mixed in, and the other half of the shop is handmade goods: soaps, lotions, scrubs and teas made locally. Vintage clothing racks and vinyl crates fill out the room, and the whole inventory is also listed online through its Square store.

Nine Lives Books

The Medical Center's used-book institution, sharing a shopping center with Dragon's Lair Comics near Fredericksburg Road and Medical Drive. It moved into a space about a quarter the size of its old store in 2020, so the shelves are packed tight with books, records, DVDs, CDs, magazines, comics and assorted oddities, and stock turns over fast. Staff buy from the public for store credit, and it keeps the longest hours on this list, until 9pm every day but Sunday.

Guadalupe Latino Bookstore & Gift Shop

The bookstore of the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, in the historic Progreso building on the West Side, and an official Texas visitor center as well as a shop. Shelves run from bestselling Latino authors and Mexican-American studies to self-published writers from the neighborhood, with children's and teen books in English, Spanish and Spanglish, plus art and gifts. Free author talks and book presentations happen in the store, and it opens Tuesday to Saturday from 10 to 4 only.

Cheever Books

An eclectic used and rare bookshop on Broadway just down the street from the Witte Museum, trading since 1986. It is small, cluttered and built out of annexes and side rooms, with first editions and out-of-print titles alongside deep New Age, science fiction, history and children's sections, and squishy chairs if you want to read before you buy. They also buy old and rare collections, and they are closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

There and Back Again Books

A used bookstore on the north stretch of Broadway that calls itself a treasure hunt, and means it: the shelves favour nostalgic and vintage titles described as deep cuts rather than anything currently on a bestseller table. Expect older hardbacks, odd finds and prices set by the owners rather than a chain algorithm, plus a Bookshop.org storefront for anything they do not have. It opens only Friday through Sunday, and Friday is a four-hour window, so time your visit.

The Book Cellar

The nonprofit shop in the basement of the Central Library downtown, staffed by volunteers for the Friends of the San Antonio Public Library, with proceeds going back to the library system. Thousands of new and recycled books are shelved by category, alongside foreign language titles, rare volumes, audio, video and magazines, and donations from the public keep the stock moving. It opens Thursday through Saturday from 11 to 4 only, and the library garage gives you three free hours of parking.
