A new homeowner who owns nothing is best served by the STANLEY 65-Piece Homeowner's Tool Kit: $56.51 at The Home Depot for a hammer, tape measure, level, pliers, a knife and a small ratchet with bits, all in a hard case and backed by a lifetime warranty.
The mistake to avoid is buying the wrong kind of set. Six of these twelve are household hand tool kits, four are mechanics sets built around sockets and ratchets, and two are Black+Decker drills bundled with hand tools. A 108-piece mechanics set like the DEWALT DWMT73801 sounds bigger than a 65-piece kit, but it has no hammer and no tape measure. Price runs from $26.94 to $114, and piece count, from 52 to 322, tells you surprisingly little about which is the better kit.

Household tool kit or mechanics set
The four mechanics sets (DEWALT 108-piece, CRAFTSMAN 57-piece, Anvil 200-piece, Kobalt 170-piece) are for bolts, appliances and cars. The Anvil 200 and the Kobalt 170 cover all three drive sizes, with the Anvil at $68.97 and the Kobalt the priciest set in the table at $114. The DEWALT ($99) spends its money on two 72-tooth ratchets and a socket profile meant to grip flats, but its warranty is 1 year limited, while Craftsman and Stanley cover their comparable sets for life.
The CRAFTSMAN CMMT99447 is the one that crosses over. It is filed as a mechanics set, but it adds the hammer, tape measure and utility knife that mechanics sets usually leave out, which makes it the closest thing here to a single box for both jobs.
Why the piece count misleads
The WORKPRO 322-Piece kit and the Husky 52-Piece kit cost the same $44.99. Much of the WORKPRO's count is bits, cable ties and small consumables, and it comes in a nylon bag rather than a case. The Apollo Tools 71-piece kit goes the other way: at $69.99 it is the most expensive per piece of the hand tool kits, and what you pay for is its lifetime warranty and case layout. When you compare, count the distinct tools (hammer, tape, level, pliers, drivers) rather than the number on the box.
The 12V or 20V drill kit
Black+Decker's two bundles are $10 apart. The 12V MAX kit ($89.99, 59 pieces) has a drill Black+Decker calls 35% more compact than its old NiCad model, with a mid-handle and LED light for one-handed work inside a cabinet. The 20V MAX kit ($99.99, 68 pieces) has an 11-position clutch and a battery that holds a charge up to 18 months on the shelf. Furniture and picture hanging suit the 12V, and decking and masonry the 20V. Both come in a soft bag, where small bits get lost more easily than in the nine hard cases elsewhere in the table.

STANLEY 65-Piece Homeowner's Tool Kit (94-248)

Reviewers on Stanley's own page recommend it as a starter or backup kit and call it a good gift for a first-time tool owner, though one of the more critical reviews there calls out the build quality as merely adequate for the money. If you want one box that covers picture-hanging, flat-pack furniture, and tightening a loose bolt, this is the safe pick.
DEWALT 108-Piece Mechanics Tool Set (DWMT73801)
A socket-and-ratchet set rather than a household kit: two 72-tooth quick-release pear-head ratchets in 1/4 and 3/8 inch drive, a long run of SAE and metric sockets, extensions, hex keys, and bit driver. DeWalt's DirectTorque socket profile is meant to grip flats instead of corners so rounded fasteners are less likely. The ratchet head is advertised as up to 25% thinner than the set it replaces, which is the difference between reaching a bolt behind a dishwasher and not. Reasonable pick if you want one box that does both house and garage without buying two sets.
Apollo Tools 71-Piece Household Tool Kit (DT0204)
A broad household kit sold direct by Apollo, aimed at wood, metal, craft, and general home and garage repair rather than at cars. The trade-off against the hard-case hand kits is that a soft bag is worse at keeping small pieces findable, and the hand tools here are lighter duty than Stanley's or Craftsman's.

The highest piece count here by a wide margin, and the cheapest per piece, built around an 18-inch 600D nylon bag rather than a case. WORKPRO says the tools meet or exceed ANSI specifications, and the kit covers hammer, level, tape measure, utility knife, pliers, screwdrivers, hex wrenches, cable ties, and socket sets. Read the count with some skepticism: a large share of 322 is bits, cable ties, and small consumables rather than distinct tools. Worth flagging that WORKPRO's own store lists this kit at $129.99 while Walmart sells it for $44.99, so shop the seller, not the sticker.
Anvil 76-Piece SAE and Metric Homeowners Tool Kit (A76HOS)
Home Depot's house-brand household kit, covering both SAE and metric sizes, with screwdrivers, bits, pliers, hex keys, and an adjustable wrench in a storage case. It sits in the same slot as the Husky 52-piece but with more pieces for a few dollars more, and it is the kit to grab if you want a basic set today from a store you can return it to easily. Anvil tools are positioned below Husky in Home Depot's own lineup, so treat this as a starter set rather than something to hand down.
Anvil 200-Piece SAE/Metric Mechanics Tool Set
The cheapest way in this table to get all three common drive sizes, 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch, in one case, along with hex keys, wrenches and bits. At $68.97 for 200 pieces it undercuts the DeWalt 108-piece set on both count and price, which tells you where the money went: this is a volume set from Home Depot's value house brand, not a set built around a premium ratchet. Buy this if you want the drawer-sized kit that covers 90% of household jobs, and skip it if you expect to work on a car.
Kobalt 170-Piece SAE and Metric Mechanics Tool Set
Lowe's house-brand answer to the DeWalt and Craftsman mechanics sets, covering 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch drives in both standard and metric sizes in a hard case. It is the priciest set in this table at $114, and the case-per-piece logic is the same as the Anvil 200: you are paying for coverage across drive sizes rather than for a single excellent ratchet. At roughly half the price of the Husky and Anvil kits it is the sensible pick for a first apartment, a second kit for upstairs, or a gift, but there is no established warranty story behind it the way there is with Husky, Stanley or Craftsman.
How we researched this
Every set here is general purpose, something you could hand to a person who owns no tools, so pliers-only sets, socket-only sets and cordless multi-tool combos were left out. Home Depot's and Lowe's house brands (Husky, Anvil, Kobalt) are included because they are what many homeowners actually buy. Prices were read from four sellers on September 3, 2026, and the Sold At column names each one. That matters most for the WORKPRO kit, which Walmart sells for $44.99 and WORKPRO's own store lists at $129.99.
The Husky 110-Piece set was left out because Home Depot showed it out of stock, the Crescent 170-Piece because no page we could reach showed a trustworthy price, and Amazon-only kits such as Amazon Basics and DEKOPRO because we could not read a price from the page we would have cited. Warranty would have been a useful column, but only four product pages stated it, so it lives in the write-ups instead. Every cell is filled.
