Movie Theaters in San Diego With Recliners
Recliners fill nearly every auditorium at six theaters in and around San Diego: AMC UTC 14, AMC La Jolla 12, AMC Chula Vista 10, Regal Edwards Mira Mesa, and both THE LOT cinemas, at Liberty Station and in La Jolla. At the other four AMCs (Mission Valley 20, Otay Ranch 12, Plaza Bonita 14 and Palm Promenade 24), reclining seats are limited to the premium screen, so the showtime you book decides whether you get one.
That sets up a trade between the biggest picture and a guaranteed recline. AMC UTC 14 is the one theater with a Dolby Cinema house and recliners at every showtime, and Regal Edwards Mira Mesa pairs IMAX, RPX and 4DX with recliners in all but a few auditoriums. La Jolla 12, Chula Vista 10 and the two LOT cinemas run standard laser projection only.

Full recliner theaters versus one premium room
The difference shows in the schedules. For the week of September 3, 2026, every showtime block was tagged as recliner seating at AMC UTC 14 (24 of 24), AMC La Jolla 12 (14 of 14) and AMC Chula Vista 10 (12 of 12), and 32 of 36 at Regal Edwards Mira Mesa, where a few auditoriums were never converted. At AMC Mission Valley 20 it was 2 of 39, at Otay Ranch 2 of 21, at Plaza Bonita 1 of 26 and at Palm Promenade 1 of 23.
At Mission Valley and Otay Ranch the reclining room is the Dolby Cinema house, so booking a Dolby showtime is how you get one. At Plaza Bonita and Palm Promenade, check the showtime details before you buy, and at Mira Mesa, look at the seat map for the specific showing.
IMAX, Dolby Cinema or standard laser
Four theaters have an IMAX house: Regal Edwards Mira Mesa, AMC Mission Valley 20, Palm Promenade 24 and Plaza Bonita 14. Dolby Cinema is the top format at UTC 14 and Otay Ranch 12, and Mission Valley has a Dolby house beside its IMAX. Plaza Bonita and Otay Ranch also have auditoriums with screens over three stories high. The rest, AMC La Jolla 12, AMC Chula Vista 10 and both LOT cinemas, show everything on standard laser projection, so a fully reclining room there comes without a large format screen.
Small dine-in rooms that sell out on weekends
THE LOT Liberty Station has only 429 seats across six screens, in the former Luce Auditorium at the old Naval Training Center, and THE LOT La Jolla has 493 across seven, with a full restaurant and bar in the old Jonathan's Market on Fay Avenue. Both book up on weekend evenings. AMC La Jolla 12 has small auditoriums too, about a thousand seats across 12 screens near UC San Diego, and its popular showtimes go early.
The options in detail
AMC UTC 14
This is the rare San Diego multiplex where the recliners are the whole theater and not just one premium house: every showtime on the current schedule is sold as AMC Signature Recliners. It lives inside a converted Robinsons-May department store that opened as ArcLight La Jolla in 2012, which is why the auditoriums feel unusually wide and steeply raked, and AMC reopened it in 2021. For 14 screens it carries a lot of hardware, including a Dolby Cinema house and a PRIME at AMC screen. The catch is the setting: it sits inside Westfield UTC, so weekend parking and mall traffic are part of the trip.
AMC La Jolla 12
A straightforward recliner house next to UC San Diego, where the whole schedule is sold in reclining seats rather than only the premium screens. It opened in La Jolla Village Square in December 1994 and holds 12 screens and about a thousand seats, so the auditoriums are small and popular showtimes go early. There is no IMAX or Dolby room here: everything runs on standard laser projection. Pick it when you want a reclining seat near campus or the coast and do not need a big format screen.
AMC Chula Vista 10
The smallest full recliner theater in the South Bay: 10 screens, about 860 seats, and every showtime on the schedule tagged as recliner seating. The building dates to 1993, when it opened on Broadway as a Nickelodeon, so it is an older shell with newer seats inside. There is no large format screen, just standard laser projection. It is the closest reclining option if you are in central Chula Vista and would rather not drive out to Otay Ranch.
Regal Edwards Mira Mesa
The most format heavy theater on this list: 18 screens carrying IMAX, RPX and 4DX under one roof, with recliners in nearly every auditorium. Almost all showtimes are sold as recliner seating, but a few auditoriums were never converted, so it is worth checking the seat map for a specific showtime. It opened in 2000 as Edwards Mira Mesa Stadium 18 and is the largest recliner house in the northern half of the city. AMC Mission Valley 20
The biggest theater on this list at 20 screens, but recliners are the exception here rather than the rule: only the Dolby Cinema auditorium is sold with reclining seats, and the rest of the schedule is standard seating. It also runs an IMAX with Laser screen, so it is the central San Diego choice for a big picture. The theater opened in December 1995 and sits off Camino Del Rio North with easy freeway access and a large lot. Book the Dolby showtime specifically if reclining is the point of the outing.
AMC Palm Promenade 24
Worth knowing before you go: the 24 in the name is history, not a screen count. Ten auditoriums were mothballed in 2011 and the theater now runs 14, with reclining seats limited to its premium screens rather than the whole building. It opened in 1999 at Palm Avenue and I-805 and has long been the default multiplex for South San Diego, Chula Vista and cross border traffic, and it does have an IMAX with Laser house. Come for the big screen, and check the showtime details if you specifically want to recline.
AMC Otay Ranch 12
A 2007 build at Otay Ranch Town Center with 12 screens, and two of them are auditoriums with screens over three stories high. Reclining seats are limited to the Dolby Cinema house, so this is a premium screen pick more than a recliner pick: the rest of the schedule is standard seating. It is the newest of the South Bay AMCs and the most comfortable big screen option in eastern Chula Vista.
AMC Plaza Bonita 14
Attached to the Plaza Bonita mall in National City, this 2008 theater has 14 screens, 2,600 seats and an IMAX with Laser house, plus three auditoriums built with screens over three stories high. As at most of the South Bay AMCs, reclining seats are limited to the premium screens rather than the whole building, so check the showtime before you count on one. It is the handiest large format room if you are coming from National City or the 805 corridor.
THE LOT Liberty Station
A six screen dine-in cinema in the former Luce Auditorium at the old Naval Training Center, reopened in 2016 with the original oak stage and concrete proscenium still on view in the lobby. Every seat is an oversized reclining leather chair, and you order food and drinks to your seat with a button instead of queuing at a concession stand. It runs laser projection with reserved seating, and with only 429 seats in the entire building, weekend showtimes fill early. It is the most atmospheric room on this list and the one most worth booking ahead.
THE LOT La Jolla
A seven screen cinema that opened in 2015 inside the former Jonathan's Market on Fay Avenue, an $18 million build by Adolfo Fastlicht, formerly of Cinepolis USA. Like its Liberty Station sibling, every seat is an oversized reclining leather chair with ordering to your seat, and the building holds a full restaurant and bar rather than a concession stand. With 493 seats across seven auditoriums the rooms are small, and weekend evenings book up. It is the pick for dinner and a movie in the village without moving your car.
How we researched this
A theater made this table only if a source we could read confirmed reclining seats. How much of each theater reclines is not a column because no page states it in a quotable sentence; it comes from counting the showtimes tagged as recliner seating in a showtime feed for the week of September 3, 2026, which is why a retrofit could change it. That count also kept out AMC Fashion Valley 18 (no recliner showtimes out of 36) and Regal Parkway Plaza, Rancho San Diego and Rancho Del Rey, which advertise stadium seating. Cinépolis Del Mar and Angelika Carmel Mountain are widely described as having recliners, but no readable page confirmed it. Reading Cinemas Town Square and Grossmont have closed, and North County theaters are a separate search.
Addresses, screen counts and opening years come from Cinema Treasures, and premium formats from showtime listings; the two LOT rows cite the chain's own site.
