Bouldering areas near Palm Beach Gardens

Blowing Rocks Preserve

The closest thing to real rock climbing anywhere near Palm Beach Gardens: a mile of Anastasia limestone on Jupiter Island, about half an hour north, where wave-eroded coquina has left overhangs, pockets and small caves along the beach. Mountain Project catalogues 14 problems here, mostly in the V0 to V5 range, and climbers rate it the best natural rock in the state. It only works at low tide with a calm sea, and how high the climbs are changes with how much sand the season has moved, so check the tide chart before you drive. The Nature Conservancy runs it as a nature preserve rather than a climbing area: no pets or food on the beach, sea turtle nests are roped off in summer, and the gate locks at 4:30. The Nature Conservancy currently has the preserve closed after a hurricane, so check its site before you drive.

Wellington Village Park Boulder

A single concrete boulder in a municipal sports park, tucked between the skate park and a playground about half an hour southwest of Palm Beach Gardens. Climbers who have been say the surface feels close to sandstone and holds up well for a man-made rock, with a couple of problems around V2 to V3 plus a traverse all the way around it. Wood chips ring the base, so you can turn up with shoes and chalk and skip the crash pad. It is one boulder, not a session's worth of climbing, but it is free, open until well after dark on weekdays, and by far the closest place to Palm Beach Gardens where you can actually pull on holds outdoors.

Boulder Bloc Gym

The only dedicated bouldering gym in the region, and the one most worth the drive if bouldering is specifically what you want. No ropes at all: Walltopia walls up to 15 feet covering about 2,400 square feet of surface, plus a 16x12 Kilter Board that the gym says is the largest in South Florida and adjusts from 15 to 70 degrees, a Treadwall, and a proper fitness area with barbells, hang boards and an air bike. It is roughly an hour south of Palm Beach Gardens in a Pompano Beach industrial unit, no reservation needed, and shoes rent for $5. The trade-off is size: 2,400 square feet is a small footprint next to the big Miami gyms, so a strong climber can work through the setting quickly.

projectROCK

A big Oakland Park gym built as a themed tour of American climbing destinations, with cabins, carved logs and mural walls between the climbing structures. It covers bouldering, top rope, lead and rappelling, so it suits a group where not everyone wants to do the same thing, and it runs an Intro to Bouldering class for people starting out. The day pass is $26 without gear or $35 with it, and there is a discounted rate for military, police, fire and teachers. Worth knowing before you drive down: it opens to the public at 1pm on weekdays, with the earlier slot reserved for members.

Velocity Climbing

The most serious climbing facility on this list, in a purpose-built Miami building a block from the Earlington Heights Metrorail station. Alongside bouldering it has 60-foot top rope and lead walls, a speed wall, auto belays and a Kilter board, and its bouldering includes a reproduction of the Innsbruck IFSC world championship competition wall. The bouldering day pass is $30 and includes rental shoes, which softens the gap with the cheaper gyms up the coast. It is the longest drive here, roughly an hour and a half from Palm Beach Gardens, and it does not open until 3pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

The Edge Rock Gym - Miami

Running in West Kendall since 1998, this is the longest-established gym on this list, and it says Climbing Business Journal considers it a routesetting epicenter for the country. The wall count is the largest here: bouldering with a cave and a Kilter Board, 12 auto belays, 29 top ropes and 17 to 20 lead lanes. It is set up as a training facility rather than a drop-in attraction, so first-time visitors sit through an orientation and parents supervise their own children. Two catches for a bouldering trip: shoe rental is $10.25, the priciest on this list, and at roughly an hour and forty minutes it is the farthest drive from Palm Beach Gardens.
